Usando a bioluminescência como defesa: parece que o peixe cospe luz, mas não é bem assim. Ele tentou engolir um Ostracoda (um crutáceo minúsculo), e esse animalzinho é capaz de produzir luz usando duas substâncias chamadas Luciferina e Luciferase, o mesmo processo feito pelos vaga-lumes. Essa foi a primeira vez que esse mecanismo de defesa foi registrado em vídeo; o ostracodo libera luz quando se sente ameaçado, fazendo o seu predador se assustar e fugir uma vez que ele não quer ser avistado por outros predadores maiores. Essa luz produzida por eles também acaba estragando a caça de outros animais: as baleias cachalotes ao se moverem na água acabam acionando esse mecanismo de luz dos ostracodas e assim denunciam sua presença para lulas gigantes que, por terem os maiores olhos do mundo (do tamanho da cabeça de um homem) detectam as luzes e fogem, evitando virarem comida de baleia.
