Lagartas da família Limacodidae parecem fogos de artíficio explodindo! São geralmente muito coloridas com vários "espinhos" urticantes pelo corpo, cada milímetro de seu corpo parece gritar "Perigo, não chegue perto"! E é um aviso que dever ser seguido: encoste em uma das estruturas urticantes (os "espinhos"), e você vai ter mais de 24 h de queimação e dor na pele. Sãop geralmente pequenas, predadas por pássaros, aranhas ou outros insetos que têm resistência à toxina ou sabem se alimentar das lagartas sem tocar nas estruturas urticárias. A família tem uma variedade muito grande de lagartas e todas em seu estágio final se tornarão mariposas, tão diferentes quanto as lagartas.
