Momento único: o nascimento de uma arraia! / An unique moment: the birth of a stingray!

 

 As arraias fazem parte de um grupo chamado Chondrichthyes, que incluem tubarões e quimeras; os ovos destes animais, também chamados de bolsa de sereia, são bem diferentes do que estamos acostumados: retangular, ele tem projeções em tubo que saem pelos quatro cantos, por onde a água passa para chegar até o embrião levando oxigênio e nutrientes para finalizar seu desenvolvimento. Além disso, essas projeções prendem o ovo ao substrato, impedindo que ele seja levado pela corrente e que o ovo acabe sendo enterrado na areia.

Stingrays are part of a group called Chondrichthyes, that includes sharks and chimeras; the eggs of these animals, also called mermaid's purse, are very different from what we are used to: rectangular, it has projections on tube at the four corners, through which water passes to reach the embryo, carrying oxygen and nutrients to finalize it's development. Moreover, these projections hold the egg to the substrate, preventing it from drifting and that from being buried in the sand.
