Por que as folhas das plantas mudam de cor no outono?

Quando a temperatura começa a baixar e os dias ficam mais curtos, algumas plantas começam a se preparar para a menor incidência de raios solares e possível falta de água e param seu desenvolvimento; para isso, elas param a produção de clorofila (pigmento usado para fotossíntese) e, com a diminuição da clorofila, a cor verde das plantas some, deixando a mostra as outras cores ali presentes, como vermelho, laranja e amarelo. As folhas também começam a cair, uma forma da planta poupar energia durante o inverno; esse estado é conhecido como dormência, algo parecido com a hibernação dos animais. Por isso que algumas árvores parecem "mortas" durante certa época do ano, e depois voltam a ficar verdes e cheias de folhas.

Why do the leaves change color in autumn?

When the temperature starts to drop and the days get shorter, some plants begin to prepare for the lower incidence of sunlight and possible lack of water and stop its development; for that to happen, they stop producing chlorophyll (pigment used for photosynthesis), and with the decrease of chlorophyll, the green color of some plants disappear, leaving the appearance of other colors present on the leafs, such as red, orange and yellow. The leaves also start to fall, a way for the plant to save energy during the winter, this state is known as numbness, something like the hibernation of animals. That's why some trees that appear "dead" during certain time of year, but then get green again and full of leaves.
