Canguru da Árvore: Um dos Animais Mais Fofos Que Você Já Viu! / The Cutest Matschie's tree-kangaroo

Canguru da árvore (Dendrolagus matschiei) e seu filhote na bolsa (marsúpio). Naturais de Papua Nova Guiné, estes animais conseguem pular cerca de um metro para se agarrar nas árvores, e podem pular de mais de 18 metros e cair no chão sem se machucar.

Passam a maior parte do tempo nas árvores, se alimentando de folhas, flores, samambaias, musgo, e casca de árvore.

São animais solitários e poligâmicos; a fêmea é completamente independente do macho e cria o filhote sozinha. O único laço formado na espécie é o de mãe/filhote, e dura apenas 18 meses, quando o filhote se torna independente e procura seu próprio território.

A gestação dura apenas 44 dias, após o nascimento, o filhote minúsculo sobe no pelo da mãe até chegar na bolsa (marsúpio), onde há o mamilo para ele se alimentar e onde ele ficará por aproximadamente oito meses. Após o período de permanência na bolsa, o filhote voltará apenas para mamar por cerca de dois meses, sem entrar mais completamente na bolsa.

É uma espécie ameaçada de extinção e existem apenas cerca de 2.500 indivíduos livres na natureza. As principais causas do declínio desta espécie são a caça excessiva por sua carne, a conversão de florestas para uso agrícola e invasão humana.

Matschie's tree-kangaroo (Dendrolagus matschiei) and her baby in the pouch. Native to Papua New Guinea, these animals can jump up to three feet to grab to the trees and can jump over 59 feet and fall to the ground without getting hurt.

They spend most of their time in trees. Tree kangaroos primarily eat tree leaves. They also consume flowers, grass shoots, ferns, moss, and bark.

They are solitary and polygamous animals; the female is completely independent from the male and raises the joey alone. The only bond formed in the species is the mother/pup, and lasts only 18 months when the puppy becomes independent and starts looking for his own territory.
Gestation lasts only 44 days, after birth, the tiny joey climbs up in the mother's fur until he reachwa the pouch where there is a nipple for him to feed on and where it will live for the nest eight months. After the period in the bag, the puppy will return only to feed for about two months, without entering more fully in the bag.

It's an endangered species and there are only about 2,500 individuals free in nature. The main causes of the decline of this species are overhunting for their meat, the conversion of forests to agricultural use and human encroachment.
