Pangolim-malaio (Manis javanica) nativo da Ásia, é um mamífero muito curioso: tem o corpo coberto por escamas, uma língua comprida como a de um tamanduá, garras fortes para cavar buracos e, quando se sente ameaçado, se enrola como um ouriço. São animais com hábitos noturnos, normalmente solitários e muito tímidos; se alimentam principalmente de formigas e sua língua chega a medir mais de 40 cm e fica alojada numa cavidade especial no corpo, onde ela é constantemente lubrificada por glândulas que soltam uma substância pegajosa, para que as formigas fiquem grudadas e ele só as engula direto. Estão ameaçados de extinção devido o comercio ilegal de sua carne para medicina oriental e o consumo de suas escamas, que são acreditadas serem afrodisíacas. Inspirou a criação do pokémon Sandshrew, na série japonesa.  ©

Pokémon Sandshrew

Sunda or Malayan pangolin (Manis javanica) native to Asia, is a very curious mammal: has the body covered with scales, one long tongue like a anteater, strong claws to dig holes, and when it feels threatened, it rolls up like a hedgehog. They are nocturnal animals, usually solitary and very shy; feed mainly on ants and their tongue can measure over 16 inches and it contracts into a special cavity in the body, where it is constantly lubricated by glands that secrete a sticky substance so that the ants will stick to it and the pangolin will only have to swallow. They are considered endangered due to the illegal trade of it's meat for oriental medicine and consumption of its scales, which are believed to be aphrodisiac. Inspired the creation of Pokemon Sandshrew, in the Japanese series.©
