The actinobacteria (genus Streptomyces), found in almost any soil, when
in contact with rain droplets, produces a substance called geosmin
(Greek word meaning "earth odor"), exhaling the peculiar fragrance of
wet soil, as well as some fungus. Some researches also claim that ozone
from electrical discharges (artificial and thunderstorms) cause the same
smell. By the way, the name used to refer to the smell of wet soil or
rain smell is "Petrichor".
