Algumas
espécies de fungos (cerca de 60) crescem em círculos durante a
primavera e verão, em alguns locais da América do Norte e Europa.
Antigamente as pessoas acreditavam se tratar de um fenômeno mágico
causado durante a noite, quando fadas dançavam tanto em círculos no ar,
que deixavam rastro no chão e então se sentavam no fungos para
descansar; também acreditava-se que se a pessoa
entrasse no círculo, ela seria transportada para o mundo mágico das
fadas, ou apenas seria hipnotizada e ficaria dançando sem parar em torno
do círculo. Hoje, a explicação mais aceitável é a de que esse fenômeno
ocorre de acordo com os nutrientes presentes no solo e a forma como o
micélio do fungo se espalha.

Some species
of fungi (about 60 species) grow in circles during the spring and
summer, in some places in North America and Europe. Years ago, people
used to believe it was a magical phenomenon caused during the night,
when fairies danced in circles so much in the air that it left traces
in the ground, and then they sat down in thefungi to rest; they also
believed that if a person entered the circle, she would be transported
to the magical world of fairies, or just be hypnotized and wouldn't be
able to stop dancing around the circle. Today, the most acceptable
explanation is that this phenomenon occurs in accordance with the
nutrients present in the soil and the way the fungus spreads the
mycelium.
