Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic alteration occasioned by the presence of an extra chromosome, the pair 21, and is also known as trisomy 21. It is scientifically proven that it happens with people of any race, with no relation to the cultural, social, environmental or economic aspects. As it is a genetic issue, can be diagnosed before birth; even though the chromosomal alterations are the same in all people who have the syndrome, not all have the same characteristics and physical traits, nor malformations, the only feature common to all people is the intellectual deficit. People who have the syndrome cry, feel pain, laugh and love as anyone else in the world, they only need a special care. This day serves mainly to raise awareness about what is Down syndrome, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with the syndrome live.
